Elisabete D’Oliveira has a MSc degree in Geosciences, with a focus on Environmental Hydrogeochemistry, from Fluminense Federal University (2017). She has a BSc degree in Chemistry from Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (2011). She is currently a MSc student of Advanced Methods and Accreditation in Chemical Analysis at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto. Her research interests are Hydrogeology and remediation of contaminated soils.
Researcher
Elsa Carvalho is an Assistant Professor at Faculty of Engineering of Porto University and member of the Experimental Methods and Instrumentation committee of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR). She completed her PhD in 2013 and since then has been dedicated to the study of sediment transport and the hydraulic structures. She is the principal investigator of a FCT project.

Elsa Froufe, a Principal Investigator at CIIMAR, holds a Biology degree from Aveiro University (1997) and a PhD from the University of Porto (2006). With a strong background in genetics and evolutionary biology, Elsa’s work focuses on understanding aquatic biodiversity patterns and ecosystem complexities. Passionate about fostering scientific collaboration, she actively collaborates with a vast network of researchers as she is particularly interested in the application of integrative cross-discipline approaches to study different levels of aquatic biodiversity organization. In the last years she has been focused on the impact of climate changes in the aquatic biodiversity.

Research Technician
Elza Fonseca is a Researcher at CIIMAR. She holds a BSc in Biochemistry (2010) and a MSc in Bioengineering (2013) from the University of Minho, and a PhD in Biology (2020) awarded by the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto. Her research interests focus on Molecular & Cellular Biology, Comparative & Functional Genomics, and Evolutionary Biology. She is particularly interested in studying nuclear receptors as one of the largest superfamilies of transcription factors unique to metazoans and responsible for regulating biological processes such as cell differentiation, development, metabolism, and reproduction.

Ema Rojas is currently studying the Master’s in Medicinal and Biopharmaceutical Chemistry (University of Lisbon). She completed her Pharmaceutical-Biological Chemistry Bachelor’s degree in the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). As part of her curricular internships, Ema has worked in the Chemistry Institute of Mexico and the Faculty of Chemistry, UNAM focusing on the isolation, identification and biological assays of natural products from botanical and apiarian sources.

PhD Student
Emanuel Maldonado is a Research Fellow at CIIMAR in the Evolutionary Genomics and Bioinformatics group since September of 2010. He obtained graduation and masters degree in Computer Science from FCUP in 2007 and 2009, respectively. The masters degree project was inclusively developed in CIIMAR. His main research interests focus on studying and developing bioinformatics software applications and pipelines, thus integrating the broad fields of informatics and biology in areas, such as omics (genomics, transcriptomics, etc) and evolutionary biology. He has (co-)authored 12 scientific publications in international journals.

My research career has been largely focused on the fish aquaculture. My studies have paid special attention to issues related to nutritional conditions, assessing their potential effects on growth, health and stress of reared fish. In the last few years, I have executed projects related to Maritime Spatial Planning, small-scale fisheries and ecosystem services, thus achieving a 360º view on the marine sciences.

Esmaeil Zavvar was born in Tabriz, Persia, and holds a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering and Master’s in Marine Structures. Now, he is a Ph.D. student at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) with FCT scholarship since 1 Sep 2023. He has about 10 years of experience in civil engineering as a construction supervisor and site engineer. And about 9 years experience in Marine structure analysis on fixed and offshore floating structures. His academic experiences including some publications: some journal papers, book chapters, conferences, and books in high-ranked journals and universities. He is a reviewer in about 30 journals in Elsevier, Springer, SAGE, Taylor and Francis Group, reviewed above 300 papers since 2017. His research areas are fatigue and fracture, Structural analysis, Impact analysis, Offshore Floating Structures, Hydrostatic and Hydrodynamic analysis, Probabilistic and reliability analysis, and Strengthening methods with FRP and Concrete. Renewable energy, wind, and wave converters.

Ester Dias is a Biologist and holds a M.Sc. in Applied Ecology (2007) and a Ph.D. in Environmental and Marine Sciences (2014), completed at the University of Porto. She is currently a post-doc researcher at CIIMAR were she is studying the life history plasticity of diadromous species. Her research interests also include estuarine ecology and biological invasions, and the use of ecological tracers (e.g. stable isotopes) to characterize food webs and fish movements.

I am Panamanian graduated in Biology since 2014 at University of Panama, I expanded my studies to master in Biology, Management and Water Quality at the University of Porto in 2019. My line of research is oriented to emerging pollutants in water using the zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryo bioassays combined with a liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry. I enjoy travelling, know others cultures and dancing.

Maria Eugénia Ribeiro Pinto is an Assistant Professor at Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, Porto University (FFUP) graduated in Pharmacy, FFUP, 1984 and PhD in Pharmacy (Microbiology).
Scientific interests: Research of new chemical compounds of synthetic and natural origin with potential antifungal activity; mechanisms of action and of resistance.

Eunice has a scientific background in developing synthetic biology tools and optimizing cyanobacterial chassis for the production of added-value compounds. She carried out bachelor and master studies at CIIMAR and i3S (University of Porto), respectively. She worked as a visiting researcher at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (Japan) and, after that, she carried out doctoral studies at i3S with a stay at Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (Spain). Eunice joined the CNP team under the BlueBio4Future ERA Chair grant as research technician in microbial genetics and molecular biology.

Image, Communication and Outreach
Eunice Sousa is a Biologist with a PhD in Science Communication. Her main interests are the development of strategies for the public awareness of biodiversity through autonomous nature exploration and boost of artistic and traditional communication channels to the demands of contemporary science communication. She specialized in the direct contact with nature and the use of children trade books to the development of a more positive public perception of biodiversity. She has experience in creating, executing and evaluating science communication programs including media, hands-on activities, citizen science and exhibitions as well as natural history manipulation for museology purposes. She contributed to several types of science communication projects including “Darwin’s Evolution” exhibition, “Ponds with Life” campaign, EC-funded LIFE+ Trachemys project and “Sea Food Chains” project. Her work in science communication is reported in international journal papers.
PhD student
Eva Lopes has a Master’s degree in Marine Sciences-Marine Resources, with a specialization in Marine Biology and Ecology (University of Porto). Currently, she is doing her PhD in the doctoral program “Marine Science, Technology and Management” at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto. Her PhD thesis focuses on how the Atlantification phenomenon affects microbial communities in the Arctic Ocean, in terms of their diversity and interactions with each other, with a special focus on the nitrogen cycle. For her PhD, she collects samples at the Ny-Ålesund science station and works in partnership with the Norwegian Polar Institute.

Biobank
Fábio Faria has a Bachelor’s degree in Biology-Geology, a Master’s degree in Ecology, and a postgraduate degree in Science Communication. He has collaborated on various scientific outreach projects, particularly in producing content for field guides, educational notebooks, exhibitions, museums, and interpretive panels. He has provided technical and scientific support for environmental education projects and served as a monitor on field trips with children and young people. He is also a scuba diver and has participated in research projects in the field of marine ecology.
Currently, he is responsible for the communication of the Portuguese Blue Biobank.

Fabiola Amorim holds a DSc degree in physical oceanography (2011) by the Oceanographic Institute of São Paulo University and a MSc degree in Coastal and Sedimentary Geology (2005). She has worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Brazilian Oceanographic Modeling and Observation Network – REMO (2013-2015) and at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies at the University of Aveiro – CESAM (2011-2012). Since 2002 she have been working with observation and analysis of meteo-oceanographic data and from 2008 with ocean and Lagrangian numerical modelling. Her research areas of interest include the study of circulation processes in coastal and oceanic regions, both based on oceanographic data analysis and through numerical modeling of circulation, and Lagrangian modelling of passive (e.g. larvae, non-cohesive sediments) and non-passive (e.g. cohesive sediments, oil, chemical, bio-physical interations) particles.
