José Manuel Almeida is an adjunct professor at Veterinary and Agrarian Sciences School of the University of Tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro. He received his degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1989 the Technical Lisbon University and his PhD in 2002 in Veterinary Sciences from University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro. His research interests focus on aquatic and agroecosystems ecotoxicology.

José Manuel Cabeda graduated in Biochemistry from the Sciences Faculty of Oporto University in 1988 and obtained his PhD in Biomedical sciences from ICBAS-Oporto University in 1996. His research focuses on Molecular Epidemiology of infectious and genetic diseases and molecular diagnostics of infectious and genetic diseases. He has published 44 papers in International peer reviewed journals, 6 book chapters in International published books and 2 books published in Portugal. He is a Coordinating Professor at Escola Superior de Saúde Fernando Pessoa and an IRCA certified ISO 9001 quality auditor.

José Manuel Neves is associate professor at Faculty of Health Sciences of the Fernando Pessoa University (Porto). He graduated in Biology/Geology in 1986 (UAçores, Portugal) and completed his PhD degree in Biology in 2001 (UAçores, Portugal). His main research interests focus in ecotoxicology, ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology.

José is a marine ecologist that focus his research on the structure and functioning of deep-sea ecosystems. He is also interested in species auto-ecology and resources management. José finished his PhD in 2024 with his research on the structure of benthopelagic food-webs in the Southern Ocean, evaluating how they will be impacted by climate change and fisheries. Previously, José also studied the reproductive biology of deep-sea polychaetes, and the habitat and trophic ecology of cephalopods and fish.

Environmental and Social Sustainability
José Teixeira has a PhD in Biology and completed a post-doctorate in Science Communication. He is currently coordinator of the Environmental and Social Sustainability Office at CIIMAR, where he was coordinator of the Communication and Dissemination Office between 2014 and 2023. His interests are focused on sustainability and environmental education, hatitat restauration and biodiversity conservation. He is responsible for the coordination of enviromental awareness projects, such as “Ponds with Life” and “Ocean Action”, which was awarded in 2016 with the Green Project Award for the best Mobilization Initiative in Portugal. He integrates several European conservation programs, including the EC-funded H2020 Ponderful and LIFE+ Trachemys projects, and he is responsible for the curation and production of science exhibitions, such as: “Plastic Sea”, “Sea Monsters”, “Amphibians: a paw on water another on land”, “Museum’s Animals” and “Darwin’s Evolution”. He’s author of more than 20 scientific papers in international journals and coordinates advanced training in science communication and freshwater ecology.

José Carlos Tentúgal Valente holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (1982) from the University of Porto, where he also completed his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (1974). He served as an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto (retired) and taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the fields of General Hydraulics and Urban Hydraulics. He authored of approximately a hundred technical-scientific publications in the field of Hydraulics and has been involved in several projects related to Sanitation and Hydraulic Works. Along his career, he’s accumulated over 30 years of experience as a manager in water companies.

Victor Ramos (PhD) research focuses on the field of marine renewable energy (wave and tidal stream energy), dealing with some crucial aspects such as: resource, characterisation, performance of different technologies of energy converters (tidal and wave energy converters) and the potential impacts on the marine environment (wave climate, transient and residual estuarine dynamics, sediment transport and turbulence conditions).

I am Josefina da Conceição Tuli, of Angolan nationality, I am 23 years old and have a
degree in Environmental Engineering from the Universidade Lusófona do Porto, and a
Master’s student in Biology and Water Quality Management at the Faculty of Sciences
of the University of Porto. My professional experience is focused on preparing
environmental plans and developing awareness activities aimed at environmental
sustainability. I also have experience in management, organization and laboratory work.

Antónia Juliana Pais Costa is a biologist with a master’s degree in Biology and a PhD in Biosciences (PhD completed in 2022 at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra). She is currently a post-doc in the “Safe and Healthy Seafood and Sustainable Consumption” team at CIIMAR, working at IPMA. She has co-authored 1 book chapter and has 14 scientific publications in international journals (5 as first author). Her current research interests cover the development of healthier and more sustainable seafood products.

Juliana Ferreira holds a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Porto (2022), having conducted research as a Scientific Initiation Fellow at i3S. She is currently pursuing an MSc in Applications in Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto. She is part of the Blue Young Talent Plus (BYT+) programme at CIIMAR, where she is carrying out her MSc internship in the Biodegradation and Microbial Bioprospecting research group. Her main research interests include the development of novel biotechnological products with applications in marine and industrial environments.

Juliana Mendes has a PhD in Civil Engineering, with specialization in Hydraulics, Water Resources and Environment, by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). Since 2007 she is working at FEUP developing research related with hydrology, water resources management and optimization, warning and forecasting of extreme events (droughts and floods), river restoration and rehabilitation and hydrological and hydraulic modeling. She also worked on the construction of hydroelectric projects and she was an assistant professor of hydraulics at the School of Engineering of Polytechnic of Porto (ISEP).

Assistant Professor at the Centre for Ecological Sciences – Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru (India). Evolutionary biologist with a passion for venom research, his research focuses on unraveling the forces of natural selection that sculpt toxin molecular scaffolds in the animal kingdom.

Kathleen Abt graduated from the University of Hamburg, Germany with a BSc (2013) and MSc (2016) in Molecular Life Sciences. She joined the CNP group in 2018 and is currently working on her PhD thesis on the structure and biosynthesis of polyhalogenated fatty acid compounds from cyanobacteria.

Ksenija holds a Master’s Diploma in Biodiversity, Genetics, and Evolution from the University of Porto. Her Master’s thesis at CIIMAR focused on microorganisms involved in ice nucleation and cloud condensation in Antarctic precipitation. Currently, she is a fellow under the AntClimNow Stewardship Scheme from SCAR, working on improving access to climate-related data for Antarctica. As part of the APMAR25 and MicroANT projects, she studies the role of Atmospheric Rivers in the transport of microorganisms in the Antarctic Peninsula.

I am Senior Scientist at CIIMAR, where I head the Ecosystem Monitoring and Sustainability (EcoSignal) team and the Technological Platform of Ecotoxicological Services. I am also Invited Assistant Professor, and Coordinator of the UNESCO Chair Ocean Expert, at the University of Porto. I am a collaborator of the research group Monitoring and Modelling at Universidade Positivo (Brazil). My main expertise is in environmental toxicology and monitoring, hazard assessment, pollution and biodiversity, and ocean literacy. I got the Magellan Circumnavigation Research Prize (bee biodiversity, FCT) in 2020. My PhD is in Biomedical Sciences, with research work at the CNRS (France).

Leandro de Mattos Pereira holds a PhD in Computational Biology and Systems from Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, Fiocruz (Brazil) in the concentration area of Functional Genomics, Evolution and Phylogenomics. He worked as postdoctoral research in Bioinformatics in Omics data analysis (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metagenomics) and functional annotation, comparative genomics of Bacteria and Eukaryotes: mining of non-homologous isofunctional enzymes, reconstruction of metabolic pathways, systems biology, metabarcoding, phylogenetics, phylogenomics. His investigation line is to use Bioinformatics/Multi-omics integration in the study of the evolution of metabolic pathways, mining of non-homologous isofunctional enzymes, genes/enzymes with application in Biosynthesis of Natural Products, Biotechnology and Ecological Services.

Leonildo dos Anjo Viagem graduated in Marine Biology and obtained his Master’s degree in Molecular and Microbial Biology by Faculty of Sciences and Technologies of the University of Algarve. He is currently a PhD candidate in the Evolutionary Genomics and Bioinformatics group at CIIMAR. His main research interests are related to genomic evolution of genes associated with food preferences in cephalopods and how this may relate to the microbiome.
