Research Technician
Alícia Pereira is a biologist with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from ISPA – Instituto Universitário de Ciências Psicológicas, Sociais e da Vida, and a Master’s degree in Conservation Biology from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. She has participated in two research projects and published an article as first author. Her main research interests include sustainable aquaculture, the effects of climate change, and welfare of marine organisms.

Currently, working as a research fellow on the MAPS project. Graduated in Coastal Oceanography from the University of Plymouth (UK), followed by an MSc in Marine and Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Aveiro. Areas of interest include biophysical oceanography, atmosphere-ocean interactions, climate change and marine litter dispersal.

Amalia Pérez-Jiménez graduated in Environmental Sciences (2001) and doctorate (2008) by the University of Granada (UGR, Spain), was postdoctoral researcher in NUTRIMU-Fish Nutrition and Welfare Research Group of CIIMAR for 4 years (2010-2013). Currently, she is a Senior Lecturer at UGR (Spain) and she continues her collaboration with NUTRIMU. She is also the team leader for the research group RNM156-Fish Nutrition and Feeding at UGR. Her research interests focus on diversification and sustainable increase in aquaculture production through nutrition, the evaluation and improvement of animal welfare and the use of natural bioactive compounds to improve both animal and human health.

Amaranta Kahn studies cyanobacterial fatty acid incorporation and its implication on aquatic ecology in cyanobacteria. She obtained her PhD degree (2019) in molecular biology and biochemistry at the Weizmann Institute of Science (Ed Bayer) and in collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (Yannick Bomble). Her current research interests include molecular microbiology, biochemistry, metabolomic and lipidomic analysis. Amaranta is an extreme sport lover and, in her leisure time, she enjoys camping and dancing with friends.

Aminur Rashid is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Marine Biotechnology and Aquaculture at the University of Porto, affiliated with the Aquatic Animal Health group at CIIMAR. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries and a Master of Science in Aquaculture from Sylhet Agricultural University, Bangladesh. He pursued a second master’s degree in Aquaculture with a major in health management from Ghent University, Belgium. His Ph.D. research focuses on exploring the potential of bioactive compounds from halophyte residual biomass to enhance fish health and disease resistance. His professional motto is to alleviate hunger through aquaculture.

PhD in Pharmacy-Bromatology, MSc in Food Toxicology and Quality Control and BSc in Biology (Wildlife Resources and Environment), by University of Lisbon. Researcher at Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere – IPMA, I.P. Scientific research in the field of food science and technology applied to fishery/marine products (wild and farmed), studying several aspects: i) quality, namely: sensory properties, physicochemical and biological characteristics; ii) quality changes during handling, processing and storage, shelf life studies. Current research interests covers the development of sustainable healthy seafood, namely the production of cell-based fish fillets. Author or co-author of peer-reviewed articles. Participation in several national and international R&D projects. Supervisor of PhD and MSC students.

Ana Garcia graduated in Biochemistry at University of Minho, where she persued a Master’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology and Bioentrepreneuship in Plants. Since 2018, Ana has been a member of A2S team, contributing to several projects. In 2021 she enroled a PhD under the doctoral program Animal Sciences (nutrition), in collaboration with Nord University, in Norway. Ana PhD studies are in the scope of the European project AQUACOMBINE. Her research is focused on exploring the inclusion of halophyte plants into aquafeeds, aiming to improve fish health and aquaculture sustainability, through green and circular economic concepts.

Ana has an MSc degree in Biology concluded at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) and a first degree in Biology concluded at the University of Aveiro (UA). She also has a Specialized Training in Teaching Geology and Biology (University of Aveiro) and an in-service training in Teaching Geology and Biology (Santarém Higher School of Education). She is a teacher at Centro de Estudos de Fátima (CEF), an elementary and secondary school in Fátima. Currently, she is attending a PhD Program in Science Teaching and Dissemination (expertise in Science Teaching) of FCUP, whose thesis topic is on “Assisted human reproduction and bioethical dilemmas: Educational intervention in secondary education”. Thus, her present research focuses on contributing to the application of active teaching methodologies in Science teaching and enhancing the operationalization of the Bioethics approach in the 12th grade Biology school curriculum.

Ana Basto holds a Bachelor’s degree in Aquatic Sciences from the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences – University of Porto (ICBAS-UP) since 2014 and a Master’s degree in Aquatic Biological Resources from the Faculty of Sciences – University of Porto since 2016. In 2023, Ana Basto completed her European Doctorate in Animal Science – Nutrition Specialty, at ICBAS-UP. Ana Basto is authorized by the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary to perform procedures on animals, and her main research interests focus on fish physiology, particularly the nutrition of marine fish species produced in aquaculture.

Ana Bio is a biologist, graduated at the University of Aveiro, who obtained her PhD at Utrecht University, the Netherlands, with a thesis on statistical species-environment modelling. Since then, her research interests evolved in the fields of species-environment relationships; estuarine and coastal ecosystems and erosion risk assessment; and underwater bioacoustics. Main activities include: coastal and ocean monitoring; empirical data analysis and statistical modelling; morphodynamics and risk assessment; remote sensing data analysis; and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

Ana Gomes-Bispo is graduated in Food Technology and Safety and has PhD in Agricultural Sciences (2017, University of Évora). Since 2017, she is a Researcher within the Emergent Biotechnologies and Seafood Processing Team (CIIMAR) and the Division of Aquaculture and Upgrading (DivAV) of IPMA, I.P. She has integrated national and international research projects like PROQUAL, ALGARED+, and NEWFOOD4THOUGHT. Her main scientific research interest concern with the development/implementation of analytical methodologies applied to the study of lipids and bioactives in marine resources, and the upgrading of undervalued marine resources, namely through the development of innovative and healthy products for human consumption.

Science Communication Officer currently focused on digital storytelling and social media, bringing science closer to people through a panoply of creative formats. With a background in Biology and additional knowledge in film and theatre, I combine scientific knowledge with artistic storytelling to craft engaging narratives and share my enthusiasm for diverse areas of science.

Ana Gavina is a PhD Student in Biology from FCUP & CIIMAR. She obtained her degree in Biology and Geology in 2009 and her Master degree in Applied Biology – Toxicology and Ecotoxicology in 2011, at the University of Aveiro. During the PhD, she is carrying out a research on a derivation of risk limits for the protection of soil ecosystems from nanomaterials. Main research interests are related to nanomaterials and soil ecotoxicology, namely the evaluation of changes in the habitat and retention soil functions as well as the evaluation of changes in soil enzyme activity under the exposure to nanomaterials.

A.Catarina Guedes graduated in Microbiology since 2002; obtained a PhD degree in Biotechnology with specialization in Microbiology by Biotechnology School of Portuguese Catholic University (ESB-UCP) on the theme: “Production, extraction and characterization of selected metabolites from microalgae and cyanobacteria”, in 2010.

Ana Catarina Torres graduated in Biology and with a Master's degree in Marine Biology. Currently, she is doing her PhD in the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto funded by FCT. Areas of interest are the characterization of the marine biodiversity of various marine systems and the study of the anthropogenic effects on biodiversity.

Research and Innovation Strategy and Funding, Technology Transfer and Business Development
Ana Cavadas integrates the CIIMAR-UP Science and Innovation Office supporting the center knowledge transfer and innovation management activities. Her main activities include the valorization and exploitation of R&D results, the management of Intellectual Property, the implementation stakeholder liaison and market-oriented R&D initiatives, the development of CIIMAR’s innovation strategy and the promotion of entrepreneurship.
Ana holds a degree in Environmental Sciences and Technology, Master degree in Environmental Engineering and a post-graduation in Business Process Engineering and Management.
Research Technician
Ana Mafalda Claro completed her Degree in Biology in 2021 and her Master’s Degree in Cell and Molecular Biology in 2023 both from the University of Porto Faculty of Sciences. In 2023, she participated as a Research Fellow in a project related to Neurobiology at the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S). Recently, she started to work as a Research Technician in a project related to Animal Science at the Center for Interdisciplinary Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR).

Marta Rojais holds a degree in Environmental Science and Technology from FCUP (2024) and is pursuing a Master’s in Toxicology and Environmental Contamination (ICBAS). With an interest in ecotoxicology and environmental risk assessment, she participated in BYT and Summer@IPN programmes, presenting her work at scientific meetings. She will begin her thesis “The ecotoxicological long-term effects of metformin in a climatic change scenario in aquatic standard species” under BYTplus programme.

Ana Couto is an Assistant Researcher at the Fish Nutrition and Welfare research group from CIIMAR. She obtained her degree in Biology from Aveiro University (2004) and her PhD in Biology from Porto University (2014). Ana’s research focus on aquaculture fish nutrition, particularly on the effects of dietary formulations in fish intestinal morphology, digestive physiology, and health. Her research aims at developing sustainable, health-promoting feeds for cultured fish and diagnosis tools for nutritional pathologies and health monitoring. Ana is author of 50+ scientific papers published in international peer-reviewed journals.

Environmental Monitoring and Interpretation Center (CMIA) Matosinhos
Ana Filipa Costa has a degree in Ecotourism (ESAC-IPC) and a master’s degree in Marine Sciences, biology and ecology (ICBAS-UP). She is part of the CMIA team in Matosinhos, where she prepares and organises activities and content for ocean literacy.
Previously, she was a research fellow on the Inseafood and e-FishMarket projects, collaborated with the Blueforesting project, all at CIIMAR, and was the coordinator of the Environmental Education Department at Associação Almargem.
Inspired by the sea, her main interests centre on marine conservation, science communication and dissemination and civic ecology.

I’m a pharmacist graduated by the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) – Brazil. I’m in the second year of the master’s degree in Consumer Sciences and Nutrition at Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) and Faculty of Nutrition and food sciences of the University of Porto (FCNAUP). I am developing my master’s thesis under the supervision of professor Luísa Valente and aims to evaluate the impact of different cooking methods on the lipids of turbot fish (Scophthalmus maximus).

Ana Fonseca holds a BSc in Environmental Health at the School of Health – Polytechnic Institute of Porto and a MSc in Environmental Toxicology and Contamination at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar of the University of Porto. She is currently PhD student in Marine Biotechnology and Aquaculture in the Faculty of Sciences – University of Porto, integrating the Blue Young Talent PhD program of CIIMAR. Her research interests focus on finding novel pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals for human metabolic diseases and appetite control, bioprospecting the bioactive potential of microalgae, cyanobacteria and actinobacteria.

Ana Sara Gomes holds a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences and a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology applied to Health Sciences from the University of Porto. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow under the project “Sustainable antifouling agents: from grape wastes to the sea with the green chemistry leading the way” of Prof. Marta Correia da Silva (PI).

Ana Sofia Lavrador is a molecular biologist with a PhD in Molecular and Environmental Biology (2025) from the University of Minho. Her research focuses on eDNA metabarcoding approaches to monitor marine biodiversity. She also has experience at the science-policy interface. Currently, as a Junior Researcher at CIIMAR, she contributes to the BioProtect project by developing eDNA-based tools for mapping and monitoring deep-sea vulnerable marine ecosystems.

Ana Luísa Maulvault is a PhD student in Environmental studies, at Nova University of Lisbon, and research team member of the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA, I.P.), as well as of the Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre (MARE). She holds a master degree in Marine Biology, with specialization in Fisheries and Aquaculture, from the University of Algarve (2009). She authored 3 book chapters and 26 scientific publication in international journals (6 as first author).

Ana Luísa Rebelo has a degree in Biochemistry and a master’s degree in Food Science and Technology from FCUP. In 2021, she began her professional career as a specialist at QUINAS BEVERAGE INDUSTRIES, becoming director of the Quality and Production Department of the group’s production units. She is currently a student on the Doctoral Programme in Animal Science at ICBAS.

The author is a researcher at CIIMAR, funded by the FCT Individual Scientific Employment Stimulus (6th edition). She leads BriSK, integrating hydrological modeling, CFD, and climate projections to assess bridge scour risk. She is an active member of several scientific organizations, including OE, PIANC, IABSE, IAHR, APRH, RISCOS, and EGU. She serves on the Advisory Board of Water (MDPI), the AQUARIUS Expert Team, the IAHR Europe Leadership Team, and the Panel of Experts for the IAHR Label for Water Training and Education (UNESCO-IHP). An Associate Editor of three journals, she has authored and co-authored several scientific publications.
