CIIMAR played a prominent role in the Ocean Race Europe Fly-By, which took place in Matosinhos on 19 and 20 August 2025.
The Fly-By of the Ocean Race Europe, which celebrated the passage of the iconic international regatta’s boats along the Portuguese coast, was also a unique opportunity to bring the community closer to science and the ocean.
The event reception at the Porto de Leixões Cruise Terminal welcomed a sea of visitors over the two days. In addition to sporting and cultural attractions, the event featured a Sea and Science Pavilion organised by CIIMAR, where the public could enjoy a range of interactive activities promoting ocean literacy and raising awareness of its valuable resources, the sustainability of its use and the challenges facing the oceans. From wave energy capture and solutions for retaining plastic from the ocean to the discovery of coastal biodiversity, CIIMAR also counted on the indispensable participation of CMIAS from Matosinhos and Vila do Conde.
On the first day, visitors enjoyed a festive atmosphere with inflatables, trampolines, street food, wine tastings and a Ferris wheel overlooking the sea. In the evening, the multimedia show “Guardians of the Ocean: A Nocturnal Odyssey” illuminated the cruise terminal with projections inspired by the ocean and its biodiversity, reinforcing the emotional connection with the sea.
On the second day, the highlight was the arrival of the IMOCA sailboats off the coast of Matosinhos. In addition to the permanent exhibition of scientific activities promoted by CIIMAR, the day was marked by sailing baptisms, workshops for families and children, and Ocean Talks — sessions promoted by CIIMAR that brought together scientists, experts and guests from the Ocean Race to discuss the future of the oceans, marine pollution, climate change and the importance of collaboration between the Ocean Race and research centres such as CIIMAR in collecting samples throughout the race.
The event ended with entertainment at sunset, live music, and documentary film sessions on environmental themes.
CIIMAR’s presence reinforced Portugal’s commitment to ocean conservation, scientific knowledge, and the involvement of local, national, and international communities in environmental causes. Through an accessible and dynamic approach, the centre contributed to making this Fly By not only a nautical celebration, but also a celebration of science and citizenship for the ocean.
